To buy… or not to buy?

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Personally, I think it’s about time for Cosplazy to even out the criticisms with some advice. You can’t stop bad cosplaying you don’t acknowledge, but at the same time you need to point those people in the right direction.

The following question was asked by Chivon (Dark Snake) on our myspace profile.

I think it’s great you make not only your costumes but others too. Do you think it’s better to make your own or buy one from a store?

Well Chivon, you could own this genuine Final Fantasy X-2 Paine costume for the extra low price of $379.00 (including shipping) excluding the boots, the wig, the necklace, and the sword!

Oh, and did I mention it would take about 4 weeks for the costume to arrive from Shanghai, China?

Now, personally it looks to me as if the sweat shop workers in China have run out of quality material. Although the item description claims the costume is made of leather, it fails to mention that ‘’leather” in chinese actually means “plastic garbage bags.”

Last time I checked, Paine’s costume was sexy. Now her shorts are large enough to accomodate her Depends(TM) undergarments. The leg pieces look as if they are falling down into the boots and are awkwardly uneven.

Cosplay costumes are hard to find and usually very expensive. Oftentimes they’re produced in mass quantities and thus not very good. Even if they are decent, the fact remains that you could make one of your own at less than a quarter of the price, half the time of the 4 weeks it would take for the manufactured one to be shipped, and you could rest assured that no one else in the world owns the same exact costume.

Now, Chivon, to further demonstrate my point, I will finally finish MY Paine costume and compile a list of all the materials I used with the total cost of the costume. Be sure to check back at a later time for an update!
